An effective method for Age ManagementThe first challengeIn many workplaces today the average age is between 45 and 50, a figure that will gradually reach new heights. Unfortunately most companies and their managers do not know how take into account the varied work capacity of an aging workforce while organizing job duties. This is our first challenge – right now, and it will be with us for a few more years to come. The second challenge The number of people retiring will gradually grow. The problem is that so many are leaving the workforce simultaneously. In many workplaces the numbers of people retiring will double or even triple in the long term. This situation places enormous demands on companies to hire new employees while ensuring the systematic transfer of knowledge and experience before large waves of senior employees reach retirement age. This is our second challenge – not yet as pronounced as the first, but it will heavily influence the labour market between 2010 and 2015. The company challenge Even though the EU and its various departments have tried to point this out on many occasions, remarkably few companies are working systematically to create conditions to encourage employees to remain in the workforce, nor are they laying the foundation to transfer knowledge from one generation to the next, which will be necessary to cope with the impending large numbers of employees retiring. But there is a practical solution to these problems; Age Management! Age Management i Sverige AB (AMSAB®) is a small private company, owned by its two senior consultants Barbro Skoglund & Caj Skoglund. Since the beginning of 2001 we have strongly committed ourselves to the introduction of Age Management in Sweden. We have developed a method for training Managers in Age Management. The basis for this engagement is a firm and belief that Age Management is the most powerful tool for improvement of the work ability of older workers. Our model for training managers in Age Management has been evaluated by researchers at the Department of Human Work Sciences at the Lulea University of Technology in Sweden. The evaluation showed that the model was effective. The concept of Age Management, according to our experiences, can successfully promote work ability among older workers. Training and support of managers in the principles of Age Management should be an integrated part of Management Programmes, at least in companies and organisations with an ageing workforce. We can help your company or organisation design a successful Age Management intervention, based on our experiences and knowledge.
